New technologies--SKYPE- A Money saver

This post is about using skype-- to make international calls instead of using regular landlines or mobile phones. The technology used is called VOIP ( Voice over internet protocol) and the best part of the technology is that it is much much cheaper.

The technology is not perfected yet and the voice doesnt have the same clarity as it does on a cellphone , and there are delays in the voice and sometimes ( rare occassions ) it echos- but it is really worth the effort to try it out.

There are multiple providers - but the best one out there is "SKYPE". All you need to do is to download the software and install it, buy a microphone or a web cam with one ( since you can do video calling also) and get the other person to also do the same and you are ready to go..

The quality is quite decent-- I use it to talk to my parents and see them ... and it almost feels as if they are in the same room!

SKYPE is a very popular site internationally -- so most people have an ID.

They also allow calling to landline phones - for a fee- I still have not yet seen or compared the prices vs using the phone locally- but a friend of mine uses it quite often -- and I will check with him

With the new smart phones out in the market- you can also use skype on them . ( I just downloaded it on mine). When travelling and in a wifi zone-- log onto the skype with your cell-- and you are ready to go!!
