Meru cabs- satisfied drivers

Today while taking a meru to the airport i was in a talkative mood and so was the driver. He gave me quite a few insights to the way meru operates.

To meru - what is their businesses? It is about the quality of their cars, the quality of their service and feedback from their customers.

Hence they do all things possible to ensure that their drivers are happy. That is key to their business model.

So here are a few insights.

Drivers are charged a rent per day. This depends on the type of car that they are using and it ranges from Rs 1000 to Rs 1100 per day. This is the revenue of meru cabs. So if they have 3000 cabs in a city then it is Rs 3,000,000 per day.
Anything that the driver earns above this is theirs to keep + the fact that they need to pay for their own fuel.
My cabbie told me that being honest and true - he saved over Rs 1000 a day for 10 hrs of work... Which is around Rs 30k a month.

Meru allotment of jobs is also quite done fairly through an algorithm by a computer.. To the person who is closest + has been free first... Like a call center. Being fair keeps the drivers happy and true to meru.

The best part was the fact on how they give money when customers pay via card- immediately the next day money is deposited into the drivers bank before 11am. So there is no negative impact on the driver at all. All that they need to ensure is that they deposit the slips at the deposit center everyday . The airport is one deposit center and since every cab goes to the airport at least once a day , it works very well!

The company also provides 30 days of leave a year. Now this is leave without pay, so it is upto the driver to take it or not.

The driver was all praises for the company. He was one of the first ones there and continues to be with them for the last 4 years.

The challenge that i see is how is meru going to increase its revenue.. Now that is something for another post.

Keeping true to what keeps your business alive.. And staying relevant to them is the motto of this post.

Simple isnt it.
