I always thought that big retailers would blow away competition from smaller shops. That the smaller shops would one day- and that would come soon- die away.
Recent experience showed me that maybe my theory was flawed .
Experience 1
I needed to buy a geyser and i thought that the best place to buy one was at the chroma shop.. So i went all ready to get myself a geyser .
Firstly i was agasht at the cost of a good geyser... I thought it would be around 3-5k rs... But i realised that the price was at least around the 6000 rs mark.
I went first to croma.. Here i thought .. Large retailer, tata brand.. Good value. Unfortunately i found it otherwise. The price of the geyzer i wanted to buy was at least 2000 rs more than the shop opposite.. Vijay sales.
I placed the order at vijay sales but their stock of the model was over. I then went to a local shop just outside my apartment and found the same geyzer there, even cheaper by 500 Rs.
So.. Definately nice competition from the small retailer.
Experience 2.. Online vs big retailers
Today one can buy a new iphone 4 s for 18000 rs at amazon but in croma the same product is available at 22000 Rs.
What a difference.
Not sure if this experience is only croma specific for their non branded products? Any comments are welcome.
In summary.. Check out the small shopkeeper.. He is still in the reckoning.
