Meru Cabs- creating a supplementary business model

I like Meru Cabs. Honestly. It has created a good revolution across the country. It has its issues which have not yet been addressed- like charging an additional 50Rs if you call and book a cab, but it has an entreprenueral spirit

Now , this has started off another kind of side business for the drivers of Meru cabs ( City cabs are also on the same page). When you travel to the airport, the drivers now hand out visiting cards and get additional business for themselves- advocating their services over the Meru services. They are still with Meru cabs and Meru cabs get their benefits- but the drivers get the lucrative business of going to the airport and making more money.

Its quite a development. Last time i travelled , i used the same cab driver who dropped me to the airport. he called me a day before to confirm my flight time and told me where to meet up with him- in the parking. He was not there immediately, but came within 5 mins.

Now, does this really make sense to use this additional facility that the driver is proposing. I mean if i just go to the taxi line in the bangalore airport, i dont need to wait for someone, the line is short, and the airport does a great job to get taxi's in quickly.

So , next time- i dont think i will try and use the same driver- i dont get any benefit and it takes more time to get back home.

However, each to their own.

  1. I agree with you Meru as a service and brand has created a good revolution across the country. To each their own, one can book the cab through the website or call center, or call the driver directly.

  2. Its a good concept - a win win for both the fleet owner and the business like driver - the key is how honest the driver is with his car

  3. IT has changed the way Indians would travel in private cabs - its sustaining one cycle of the car and the changeover to a new car in the 4 year period that will tell us if the concept has really worked for our conditions when the cab fares are way lower than the world average for this kind of service.
